Use these quick tips to get fresher looking face that brings out your natural beauty.

When you look through your photo albums do you cringe when you look at your clothes or hairstyle? Can you believe you ever wore your hair like that or those fringed pants?

Here are some common mistakes that makes your skin look dated, old and not at its best.

The skin care rut: My skin is not looking any better even though I exfoliate and scrub it every day.

Exfoliating with a scrub that has beads, seeds or sugar in it can sometimes irritate your skin, cause redness, dark spots and cause pores to look larger than they are. You should use a gentle exfoliator, one that has salicylic acid, glycolic acid and lactic acid. Exfoliating can remove dead skin cells, bacteria and dirt and clears pores making skin look refreshed, vibrant and younger looking. Be gentle with your face.

The skin care rut: I have a tried and true product and I will never change my regimen.

As you age, skin tends to lose moisture and hydration making your skin look and feel dry. Your skin also produces less collagen, the foundational matrix that is key to keeping you skin wrinkle free. The skin care products you used as a 20 year old will more than likely not give your skin what it needs to keep your skin firm, hydrated and smooth. As you get older, you are going to want to adjust your skin care regimen. You want to add products that exfoliate, reduce fine lines and wrinkles and hydrate your skin.

Skin care routines may need to be changed with the seasons. Winter skin needs more hydration and protection especially if you are in those areas that experience harsh winter weather. Summer skin care needs to include skin care products that contain SPF to protect you skin from exposure to harmful UV rays. Sun exposure is a primary cause for premature aging.

How can you update your routine? When the leaves start to change in fall, start using a heavier face moisturizer and be sure to gently exfoliate once a week. Use a lighter moisturizer in spring and summer.

The skin care rut: I use a moisturizer every day and my skin is still so dry.

Exfoliating can help your skin absorb your other skin care products better. Remember to use a gently exfoliator so you do not irritate your skin. Be on the lookout for a moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid. This is one of nature’s best moisturizers. It can hold up to 1000 times its weight in moisture making skin look dewy, fresh and naturally beautiful.

The skin care rut: I only use a cleanser and sunscreen – nothing more.

Cleansing your skin is a must to keep it fresh and oil free. Using a product that contains an anti-oxidant like Vitamin C or green tea can really enhance your skin care routine. It minimizes the damage from sun exposure and helps prevent fine lines and wrinkles. You should always use a sunscreen, even in the winter or when it is cloudy out.

Are You Ready to Change Your Skin Care Routine?

You may not want to change everything all at once. You should really only change one thing at a time and let your skin adjust to the change before incorporating additional changes.

You should give your skin a minimum of 2-4 weeks to adjust before making another change. This will help you assess the changes both good and bad for each product. You can easily measure the success it has on your skin and also allows you to see if the product is irritating
